No on Prop 45
It is not uncommon in California for the state’s wealthiest organizations and individuals to put measures on the California ballot and sell them to the people with a blitz of advertising. Many of these measures would never pass the legislature and be signed by the Governor. Such is the case with Proposition 45.
It was not a hard decision to oppose Proposition 45.
But for the uninformed, the campaign ads look attractive. Who could not be against red tape?
Eroding many of the state’s bulwark of environmental protections is the real mission of the ballot measure. For the backers, creation of proposition 45 was “mission accomplished” — as long they can pass it.
And they have power.
Nevertheless, Friends of the River finds itself in very good company as environmental and other groups from all over the state oppose the project. Learn more at No on Prop 45.
Defeating this initiative could not come at a more important time. After all, this ballot measure comes when state protections for the environment and the state’s rivers are doubly important. That’s because the Trump administration and its allies in the Congress are eroding key federal environmental protections in the Clean Water Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, the Endangered Species Act, and the very ability of federal agencies and land managers to represent the American public.
The direct democracy embodied in California’s initiative system means that you don’t just empower representatives to make the laws: you vote on some of them. Ideally, we can rely on an informed and committed electorate that votes. Make sure that you are one of them.
